While working at Aircards the brief was given to us to create a Mobile/ Tablet experience for very young children to make handwashing a fun and memorable experience along with teaching them basic hygiene.  We had some basic design guidelines that had to be used. Namely the tag line “H for handwashing, H for Hippo”  and a hippo as the main character. It also would need to work in multiple languages.

CHALLENGES

When dealing with such young age groups it was clear this was always going to be a managed experience with a adult guiding the child through the experience. But it needed to be designed in such a way that made it personal to each child to make it memorable. One of the bigger challenges of the project was also going to be the use of AI. It was part of the brief that this had to use AI and as with all AI making sure the results were child friendly was going to be a challenge. We also had to make sure anything being developed would translate into multiple languages.

SOLUTION

We developed several parts to the experience, 2 simple games and a personalised AI generated song. Along with this we used a 3D generated hippo that could be placed in AR and guide the child through the experience. While the 2 games were a simple to build, being just a click and colour game and a variation on spot the object. The most complicated part of the project was the AI song generation. It was decided early on that the song would need be personalised upon choices made by the child, incorporating there favorite color and food.
Using these variables and feeding the AI system the basic information about hygiene we used Suno to generate the songs in advance rather than in real time. This gave us the ability to monitor the output and filter out any unacceptable ones. It also gave us the ability to feed the outputted lyrics into the application to use them as subtitles that the child could sign along too (as well as control the actions of the AR hippo).
