Produced while working at eyekandy we were asked by Bacardi to produce an experience for the promotion of the Dewars whisky brand for the upcoming Diwali celebration. The creative team decided on a gifting experience which would enable the user to purchase a bottle of Dewars and customise a message that could be viewed by the receiver of the bottle. The message would be integrated into and AR experience that would be directly image track the packaging containing the bottle to further enhance the experience.

CHALLENGES

The experience would need to be built in 2 sections. The first section would focus on the sender of the bottle and would require the user to be able to upload a photo and a message and for us to store those details and return a unique code that the sender would then write on the label for the receiver to use to replay the message. We also had to find a way to track the packaging using image recognition, which included 3 variations depending on the age of the Dewars bottle.

SOLUTION

For the first part of the experience we used React to build a front end web site that would be simple for the user to upload a picture and write a short message. This information was then stored in a database and the user received a 4 digit code. Upon receiving the gift the user would simply scan a QR code to launch the experience and enter there 4 digit code to pull back the correct message. Along with this we used 8th walls image recognition plugin for playcanvas to control the playback of the experience. The experience consisted of 3D animation containing blank areas where the appropriate messages and photo were overlaid. Using 8th wall's image recognition enabled us to recognise the 3 variations in the packaging and play back variations on the animation to give even greater variation and uniqueness to the users experience.

RESULT

The experience was launched in Airports around the world with great success. The experience went on to be a showcase experience for Bacardi and requests for variations on the experience were requested for other celebrations throughout the year.
