IDEA

eyekandy was commissioned to create an AR experience to promote the Frubes children’s fruit snack. The client wanted an easy AR game that could be played by children as young as 6 years old. The creative team decided on a running man style game where the user would simply control the players jumping to avoid or pickup objects along the route.

CHALLENGES

We would need to create 6 characters in line with the 6 characters in the Frubes range. All the characters would need to have animation for running and jumping applied to them. We also needed to be able to place the game in such a way that would make it easy for the user to see the characters along with the obstacles. A last request was to add the addition of face tracking so that after the game ended the user could also take a selfie with there face superimposed over the chosen character.

SOLUTION

It was decided that 8th walls SLAM placement along with its face tracking component would be the best choice for the technology. By using this integrated into Playcanvas gave us the ability to add all the animated 3D characters and additional animation elements in one web application, while maintaining a low file size to ensure the quickest launch of the experience. Playcanvas's physics collision detection was used to control the game play and handle all the player interactions in the experience. Along with this 8th walls face detection was used to overlay a 2D image tracked to the users face to implement the final selfie part of the project.

TECHNOLOGIES USED

8th Wall, Playcanvas, HTML5, CSS3, Javascript

RESULT

The experience was launched with the client adding a QR code to the actual packaging to activate the experience. The client was extremely happy with the final project and it was extended beyond its initial 3 month live date to 6. It was further used and developed into another experience to launch the frozen Frubes range the following year. A video of the experience can be seen on the link below.
